Small Favors, or HoMD #31

Thursday, January 31st, 2008

It occurred to me today that I’m damn lucky to be unemployed at the moment. I’m barely sleeping, my medicine is making me nauseous, and I have no energy for the gazillionth day in a row.

At least I’m not being missed anywhere.

The Big Lebowski, or HoMD #30

I cannot manage much consecutive sleep because of the coughing, so I watched more movies today. Have I mentioned that being sick, well, it isn’t pleasant? Anyway, today I’m following yesterday’s program, but with fewer flourishes.

I don’t need to go into detail about one of the greatest films of all time, so I’ll leave it at, “The Dude abides.”

Music & Lyrics, or HoMD #29

I still feel like something that lives at the bottom of a landfill.

Since I can barely lift my head from the sofa, I’m subject to the whims of the television. Well, the scheduling elves smiled on me and sent Music & Lyrics. For anyone in the mood for a romantic comedy, I recommend this one.

Favorites from the movie:

  • “No one grows up in Florida. Unless they’re an orange.” — this one may be delivery or just the sickness talking
  • Drew Barrymore — she’s just likeable
  • Hugh Grant — many nice touches on his aging pop star
  • The songs — catchy enough to still be running through my head

Clearly this isn’t Fellini, but I got out of my sick-head for a couple of hours and would like to see it again. I genuinely liked the characters, and for a change the premise doesn’t involve dishonesty or deception from one or both halves of the couple.

Mashed Potatoes, or HoMD #28

Monday, January 28th, 2008

I reached a new stage of this illness. My throat is unbearably painful. I can barely swallow anything.

So all praise goes to my loving husband who hunt-and-gathered some smooth mashed potatoes for my dinner.

I’m still sick, but the fever has gone.

Through my misery I spied Queso curled up in what we call the house-cozy and taking a long nap. Cuteness personified.

Still Alive, or HoMD #26

I am dreadfully sick, running a fever of near 102 degrees, and miserable. The best part of this please-kill-me day is that I survived it.

My Big Project, or HoMD #25

When the New Year rolled around I looked at my life and found some things I’d like to change. Considering my life is pretty much a shanty leaned up against a pile of mouldering refuse less than ideal at the moment, improvement shouldn’t provide much of a challenge.

Anyway, I noted among a number of things that I want to entertain more often. I enjoy having people over to the house, cooking, talking, and generally interacting with other humans. I also want to do more to help my fellow humans. So I devised a way to accomplish both at once.

This year I will throw at least one dinner party a month and ask anyone who attends to provide a cash donation of how much they would have spent on dinner that night. At the end of the year all of the money will be donated to Heifer International in the names of all the guests.

Tonight was the first dinner party. Only two people were able to come, but we had a delicious meal and then played some Wii. The menu included Cheddar Corn Chowder soup with salad and bread. Thanks to The Husband and D. for pitching in with the cooking. Wii-wise we made some miis and played some Mario Party 8. Good times!

Our friends brought their daughter over for the first part of the evening. Though she played shy with us, we still enjoyed seeing her and her fantastic pink(!) hair.

A visit from the elfin folk is always welcome at this house.

Overall I deem the evening a success and a great start to a bigger endeavor.

Beautiful Monsters, or HoMD #24

Tonight was SnB again. Last week we decided to do a bit of show-and-tell this week, and I am in awe of the creations I saw.

One clever, clever stitcher makes “plushies” (stuffed dolls) that should be on sale across America. She is positively genius. Her work-a-day life in the retail world is nothing less than a travesty to the creative universe.

She brought several plushies, and I can’t choose a favorite, but here are three of the best examples of her work (you can find all her art at her site on DeviantArt.com).

Who doesn’t want their own personal Igor?

Igor Plushie

I’m a big fan of pirates and Johnny Depp, so I love me some Captain Jack Sparrow. He even has tattoos if you push up his sleeves!

And last but not least, the scariest Dr. Doom plushie in existence. I just want to hug him!

Foo Fighters, or HoMD #23

Wednesday, January 23rd, 2008

My voice is hoarse. My ears are ringing. I feel like I could do anything right now.

All because the Foo Fighters put on a damn good show.

The Foos played for over two hours, and we had good seats — the Foos were about the height of my hand. The Husband declared them the extended-song-ending musicians par excellence. I yelled and screamed and sang and wore my combat boots. Definitely a fun evening.

Through the miracle of time travel (or me cheating on when this was posted), photos from the show are available on the Foo Fighters’ blog.

Anticipation, or HoMD #22

Big concert tomorrow! The Foo Fighters are in town, and we’re going.

I’m listening to nothing but the Foos lately and memorizing the lyrics to the latest album. I want to be ready for a big night of singing, screaming, and yelling.

Looking forward to tomorrow night won’t compare with the actual event, but it’s a good time nonetheless.
