Caught up, or HoMD #21

Monday, January 21st, 2008

Anyone who’s been reading this site for the last few weeks found a surprise when they logged on today. I posted HoMDs for a week today. I even created a new category for these back-dated posts: My Name Is Kelly & I Cheat (ask my BFF for the backstory on that quote).

New Year’s resolutions pose the challenge of changing a behavior overnight. I fell off my resolution wagon, but I dragged myself back. I pat myself on the back for not sitting dejectedly in the wheel ruts while waving good-bye to my good intentions.

I can knit and read at the same time! Genius!

Getting Closer, or HoMD #19

Saturday, January 19th, 2008

I worked more on my dining room table piles. I also moved on to my work area piles. I feel fantastic about clearing this stuff away and nearing my goal of working on my projects again.

Writing about cleaning rarely entertains an audience, so I’ll leave you with the promise of sharing some works-in-progress (WiPs) soon.

Last night’s SnB paid dividends today. We got invited to eat Indian food with the comic book store group tonight.

We met some new folks, stuffed ourselves on delicious curries, discussed the Writer’s Guild strike (we support the writers), and laughed heartily at one guy theorizing on how he’s going to treat his next girlfriend.

Our social lives in Fort Worth haven’t been exactly active, so I enjoyed spending time with new people and forging some connections.

Close Knit, or HoMD #17

Thursday, January 17th, 2008

When we lived in Austin I started a book club with my BFF. We met every other week, read some great (and some not-so-great books), drank beer, watched movies, even went camping. I loved spending time with other folks who shared my interests doing things centered around those interests.

Living in Fort Worth, I have yet to build a similar circle for a book club. I quit even trying to start another book club. But the yen for a similar social circle remained.

Tonight I attended the first “Stitch ‘n’ Bitch” with a new group of folks who love to knit, sew, crochet, etc. And these are folks I want to sit and chat with for a few hours while I work on my knitting.

I’ve gone to knitting circles at local yarn stores, but I never connected with any of the other knitters. I’m not your standard knitter, so it’s not easy to find people with similar interests to discuss while your hands are working. I don’t want to talk about projects or yarn. I want to talk about fun stuff.

So where did I find my new SnB group? At my local comic book shop!

I love my local comic book shop person. First, she’s a she. Secondly, she’s bubbly (in a good way) and interesting. We share a love of Buffy the Vampire Slayer and all things Whedon. And I just found out that she knits, too. I knew I liked that girl.

Of course, as soon as I found out she knits, I threw out the idea of a “Stitch ‘n’ Bitch.” Happily she loved the idea and knows other folks who might be interested in a regular gathering. We scheduled our first group for tonight.

We met at Bubbles’ house and had four stitchers and two voyeurs. Our hostess served spinach artichoke dip. Adult beverages were served. I got to teach the comic book store manager (a boy!) how to knit. And we’ve already decided to meet again next week.

It was a solidly good time.

OMG There’s a Table Under There, or HoMD #16

Wednesday, January 16th, 2008

I am a girl with plenty of projects.

I am a girl with plenty of piles of papers.

Often the piles get in the way of working on the projects.

Today I tackled the piles that migrated from my work area to the dining room table. My theory is once I tame the dining table piles, I’ll have space to work on the piles in the work area.

Amazingly enough I cleared several of the piles, filled an entire bag of recycling, and discovered there actually is a table under all this paper.

Accomplishment (or a step towards accomplishment) feels great!

Milestones, or HoMD #15

I found out today that my 4 1/2-year old godson in Kansas City blew past a developmental landmark.

Little genius learned how to read!

He read a book to his mama.

He read it aloud. He sounded out words he didn’t know.

I could not be more proud! My boy reads!

Read about this momentous event directly from his mama.

Zzzzzz, or HoMD #14

I finished a work assignment today and celebrated by taking a long nap this afternoon. How better to take advantage of free time? It’s a luxury few people enjoy, and I relished curling up under a pile of blankets in the middle of the day.

Quiet Time, or HoMD #13

Sunday, January 13th, 2008

When your day consists of sitting in front of the computer and layering on blankets, the best things come from little moments.

Such was my day, so I decree having both cats sitting on my legs for long winter naps as the best part of my day.

Homecoming Redux, or HoMD #12

Queso had to spend last night at the emergency vet hospital. Clearly he’s struggling with his recovery from his recent illness.

But I was overjoyed to see him return this afternoon!

Everybody send healthy kitty-vibes in his direction.
